Adeel “Saqqi” Safvi started following cricket in 1992 when the Pakistan Cricket Team lifted the World Cup, changing his life forever. He would imitate Desmond Haynes, Miandad but was most influenced by Basit Ali.

Current age: 36 Years

Major teams: Muhammad Hussain CC, Cost Cuter, Abm amro Pakistan, Hsbc Dubai,Dubai warriors, Farooq CC, Gayan Steel, Wombats

Playing role: Leg Spinner

Batting style: Right-hand bat

Bowling Style: Right Arm Leg Spin

He fancied himself as a Batsman who could bowl off spin.  During his teens, he represented his school and college (DHA College for men). At the age of 17 he joined a local club named Medcare/Mohammed Hussain Cricket Club which had heavy weights like test cricketer Faisal Iqbal, Sharjeel Ashraf and many more top middle order batsman of Karachi; though he was not able to cement his place in the permanent playing 11, his ability to imitate the style of any player whether in batting or bowling did wonders for him. He started working on developing his off Spin bowling and became an attacking off spinner with an unreadable doosra, very similar to that of Saqlain Mushtaq and modelled his bowling action also along the same lines. Given the similarity, his Team mates started calling him “Saqqi”, a name by which he is known even today.

He also represented Karachi whites U19 but was unfortunate not to get any matches in that season. He continued to play club Cricket in Karachi until he joined ABN AMRO bank in 2002 as a professional banker. He represented the bank in many local tournaments under the leadership of Salman Sarwar Butt (Chairman PSL).

His cricket career took a break between 2005-2007 when he moved to Dubai in pursuit of a Banking career. 2008 saw him play his first cricket match at the Sharjah Cricket Stadium as part of an invitational xi.

Being impressed with the success of Shahid Afridi, Adeel started bowling leg spin and modelled his bowling along the same lines.

And that was the time he realized that he had wasted his entire cricketing career by not bowling leg spin.

In 2008, He joined a local cricket club “Dubai Warriors”, who he represented from 2007-09 and won many awards for his bowling. In 2010 He got an offer to play ‘A’ division cricket from Gayan Steel Cricket Club. However it was 2012/13 season where He really excelled. He won the Best Bowler award in the Bukhatir Cricket League, a prestigious cricket tournament in the entire region.

He continued to represent his Employers while he was part of HSBC. In 2015 he joined Wombats Cricket Club and ended his first season with them as the leading wicket taker for the 2015-16 season with a haul of 43 wickets including 2 three fors and a four for. His attacking bowling, amazing googlies and aggressive attitude made him a prominent bowler in the domestic league of UAE.
