Wombats lose to NMC in the UBL Floodlit T20

Mar 10, 2014, the Sheikh Zayed Stadium, Abu Dhabi

The Wombats team travelled to Abu Dhabi to play their second match in the UBL Floodlit T20 tournament. In their first match of the tournament, they had played Abtec and valiantly tried to chase down 217 but fell short by 33 runs. Haroon and Azim K had played entertaining innings scoring 81 and 64 runs respectively. In the second match of the tournament, they were facing NMC.

NMC won the toss and elected to bat. The wombats started the bowling with Atif Butt and Naeem Abbas, the former known for his late outswingers and the latter for his nippy left arm seamers. The NMC opening pair put on 25 for the first wicket before Haroon took a blinder running backwards and stretching his hand behind his head to catch the ball. Atif Butt had drawn first blood. Butts struck twice in his next over with the first of those coming of a catch taken by Haroon and then following it up with a ball that knocked back the stumps. NMC had been reduced to 35/3 in 4 overs.  Atif butt bowled out 4 overs on the trot and ended with figures of 4-0-27-3. Hammad Usmani replaced Naeem and struck with the first legal delivery he bowled. The opening batsman of NMC was caught by Ali Bajwa off Hammad’s bowling. Munad bowling from the other end got a LBW decision in his favor and the NMC team had been reduced to 61/5 in 8.3 overs. The next wicket fell in the 14th over when Ammad Jami took a catch at Mid on off Haroon’s bowling. The 6th wicket pair had put on a partnership of 28 runs and taken the total to 89/6. The next 4 over proved a bit expensive as the 7th wicket pair of NMC put on 49 runs in 24 balls before Naeem claimed a wicket in his last over , Awais Usmani taking a catch in the deep. Munad struck in his third over with Ammad Jami taking another catch while Hammad struck in the last over rattling the batsman’s wickets. The NMC innings ended at 164 runs , setting Wombats a target of 165 runs to win @ 8.25 rpo.

The wombats chase began on a disastrous note with Omar Hayat bowled on the second ball of the innings and sherry following in the 3rd over with the score reading 12/2. Ali Bajwa and Haroon G got together and strung together a partnership of 58 runs in 9 overs which included 2 fours struck by Haroon and a six struck by Ali . HAroon was bowled trying to force the pace of the innings which brought Ammad Jami to the crease. He made 7 runs before he was out stumped with the score card reading 77/4 in 13 overs. Muqtader’s stay in the middle was shortlived and he was back in the pavilion after scoring 3 runs. Munad was bowled the next ball and the wombats had been reduced to 88/6 in 16 overs. They required 77 runs from 4 overs with 4 wickets in hand to win the game, a task which was starting to seem improbable. Bajwahad been holding up one end all this while and had moved on to 40 runs before he was caught trying to hit a boundary. Atif Butt played an entertaining innings scoring 17 in 11 balls which included a 6 over covers. He was out stumped with the score reading 107/8. With 9 balls remaining, wombats required 56 runs to win. Only a miracle could save them and unfortunately no miracle came to pass and the Wombats could score only 120 runs in their allotted 20 overs.
